Hilary's work investigates the politics of land and environment in Asia. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Masters of Environmental Management from Yale University.
Hilary works within the fields of critical agrarian studies, development sociology, state theory, feminist political ecology, and Southeast Asian studies. She has published peer-reviewed articles based on qualitative fieldwork conducted in Bhutan and Myanmar.
She is currently conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Myanmar to understand how farmers, policy-makers, and activist-entrepreneurs are striving to develop land and nation at a crucial political juncture. Her dissertation research is supported by the Social Science Research Council and the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
