The Cornell Farmworker Program was highlighted by Dean Eduardo Peñalver as a vehicle for Latino students to get involved:“Roberto López ’15 asked the panel how students could contribute to the university. Peñalver suggested joining Cornell’s Farmworker Program: “You’re empowered here, but you’re also empowered as citizens. … There are Latinos all around us in upstate New York – they’re not visible, they’re isolated, and they need your support.” Read more

Douglas Gurak moving on to The Center for Migration Studies

The Center for Migration Studies (CMS) has appointed faculty member Douglas Gurak as the next editor of the International Migration Review (IMR).  He will begin a three year term as Editor on November 1st working to put together Volume 49 of the IMR. In addition to serving as IMR’s editor, Doug will also contribute to the efforts of CMS staff in Manhattan on projects focused upon immigration and refugee policy. The CMS is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary and Doug will participate in a symposium and roll-out for the IMR 50th Anniversary special edition on September 30th in New York. Brian Thiede PhD 2014 won the RSS Population Research Interest Group's Graduate Student Paper Award Winner this year. The paper, "Rainfall Shocks and Within-Community Wealth Inequality: Evidence from Rural Ethiopia" was recently published in the journal World Development. Read more
