Overview:
Dr. Flores-Macias's research and teaching interests include a variety of topics related to political and economic development. Currently, his research focuses on two main areas: 1) the politics of economic reform, and 2) the effects of migration in labor exporting countries. Before coming to Cornell, he was a visiting associate at Harvard's Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, where he conducted research for his book manuscript on the adoption of statist economic policies by left-of-center governments in the region. His main region of expertise is Latin America, with particular emphasis on Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, and Chile. He is fluent in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French.

Teaching:
Gustavo teaches "Latin American Politics, Economy, and Society" (DSOC 3290, LATA 3290, GOV 3992) at Cornell. He has taught courses in Comparative Politics, Latin American Politics, Globalization and World Affairs, and Statistics at Harvard, Georgetown, and Duke. While teaching at Harvard, he received the Derek Bok Distinction in Teaching Award in 2008.
