Overview
My scholarship is motivated primarily by an interest in aging in rural environments. I study the characteristics of older rural residents as well as how the conditions of rural communities and institutions affect rural older people. My research contributes to disciplinary concerns, extension and outreach and to public policy discussions. I often use life course theory and methods to investigate the timing, context, history and trajectories of events and transitions in the lives of older rural residents. Most of my work has focused on the United States, but I have examined similar issues in Western and Eastern Europe and recently also in Japan. I also focus my research and extension on health and health care in rural communities and what the implications are for community and rural development.
Research Focus
My recent research has focused primarily on rural retirement in-migration, examining in particular the process through which older newcomers in rural retirement destinations re-establish formal and informal social ties and what effect that has on the health and well being of older in-migrants. I have also examined how rural retirement destination communities adapt to in-movement of older people. In this five-year study, I have used findings from a panel survey, case studies and census sources to understand the dynamics of rural retirement migration. I used findings from this multi-methods approach to co-author (with David L. Brown) a book entitled Rural Retirement Migration (Springer 2008). Broadly speaking, my reseach focuses on sociodemographic aspects of aging in rural environments.
Outreach and Extension Focus
One of my goals is to blend my scholarly research and my extension/outreach programs. I communicate evidence-based research findings to public and private decision makers on topics such as the rural development implications of population aging. I have collaborated with two CCE County Association executive directors and CaRDI to develop a rural learning network (RLN) and conference series designed to educate government officials, non-profit organizations, citizens, businesses and others on topics of vital interest in a rural region of central and western New York. We ended the first year of our three-year funded project with the RLN having a membership of 224 and having held two one-day conferences on 1) Shared Municipal Services and 2) The Role of Local/Regional Foods in Community and Economic Development.
