Overview
My research focuses on migration and development linkages and differentials in immigrant group experiences. In 2007, I obtained Special Sworn Status at the U.S. Census Bureau; SSS authorizes me to conduct research on confidential census data files at the New York State Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC) based at CISER, Cornell University. My current RDC research focuses on "Immigrant Churning and New Destinations in the United States. " The Russell Sage Foundation provided a research grant for the "New Destinations " part of my RDC work. In 2006, with support from the United Nations Population Division, I prepared a report on "The Transnationalization of Higher Education and International Student Mobility. " In 2007 I obtained a planning grant from the Sloan Foundation to extend my research on international student mobility by making an "Assessment of Data on Foreign Student Flows to the United States and Other Countries. " From 2002 through 2005, I served as Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). During that period, I prepared several reports on population and development issues that were presented at United Nations meetings and available online. In 2005, I took the leadership in organizing the IUSSP XXV International Population Conference held in Turin France and attended by 2,500 population experts from 150 countries. In addition to preparing research articles for journal publication, I am working on a book-length monograph on immigrant group diversity in settlement and integration.
I plan to continue my professional outreach efforts with United Nations agencies, either by representing the IUSSP at those meetings or in my own professional capacity.
Research Focus
My research focuses on international migration and development. I am currently carrying out research on the internal migration of U.S. foreign-born to non-traditional destinations in the United States and on international student mobility and higher education.
