Research Focus

My research area remains focused on increasing the social integration of older adults through environmental volunteerism. Collaborating with colleagues in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell, I have developed a program that includes a series of educational activities focused on environmental issues, a group project and a formal evaluation of the program. The program was implemented in several NYS counties in 2009. My work also focuses on environmental issues in the Cayuga Lake Watershed. This has been directed toward a issues related to proper medication disposal, horizontal gas drilling and other environtmental issues in the area.

Outreach and Extension Focus

My extension and outreach focus is on civic participation, especially in the realm of environmental issues and older adults. Developing a program that increases the civic engagement of older adults while encouraging environmental volunteerism has been the central theme this year. In addition, I have undertaken several outreach activities in the Cayuga Lake Watershed on a variety of environmental issues.
