Strategies for Improved Workplace Relations and Farmworker Retention in New York State

Mary Jo Dudley, Director of the Cornell Farmworker Program (CFP) was awarded a grant from the New York Farm Viability Institute to pursue research and extension activities on: "Strategies for Improved Workplace Relations and Farmworker Retention in New York State".

In light of critical concerns about labor availability and reliability among New York State agricultural producers, these funds will support the CFP's efforts to improve labor stability and quality on dairy, fruit, and vegetable farms by engaging farmers and workers in joint explorations of mutually beneficial opportunities to improve workplace communication and cooperation. The project should increase farm profitability by improving worker job commitment and reducing training, recruitment, and non-wage labor costs.

Register Now for the Cornell Municipal Clerks Institute, July 8 - 12, 2012

Registrtion opens Monday, April 9!  The Cornell Municipal Clerks Institute (CMCI) is a premium educational opportunity provided by a partnership between the City and Village Clerks and the Town Clerks Associations of the State of New York and Cornell University's Community and Rural Development Institute (CaRDI). We invite you to participate. You will gain new knowledge, skills, enhance the administration of your office, and contribute to the professionalism of your municipal government.

New this Year: One-Day Option for Cornell Municipal Clerks Institute

This summer, the Cornell Municipal Clerks Institute (CMCI) will open its doors for one day, July 11, to local officials, and also to clerks who are interested in experiencing the Institute but are unable to attend for the entire four days. This is an opportunity for elected officials to participate in classes and understand the relevance of CMCI to local and county government leadership and the caliber of the training that clerks receive during their week at Cornell. Likewise, clerks who have not yet experienced the Institute but who are curious will fully participate for one day, gaining credit for classes taken towards their CMC or MMC certification through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC).  For more information, including a preliminary draft schedule visit the CMCI home page.

Stronger Economies Together (SET) prepares to expand to seven new states

The Stronger Economies Together (SET) initiative enables communities and counties in rural America to work together in developing and implementing an economic development blueprint for their multi-county region that strategically builds on the current and emerging economic strengths of that region. Creating, attracting and retaining jobs as a single rural county, in isolation from other nearby counties, is becoming increasingly ineffective. In today's global marketplace, economic development progress is more likely to be realized when rural and metro counties work together as a region to assess, design, and implement plans that build on their assets and comparative economic strengths. Launched in 2010 by USDA Rural Development and the nation's four Regional Rural Development Centers and their land-grant university partners, the exciting initiative is now in place in nearly 40 regions in 19 states. Regional teams in seven additional states will join this year in the project's Phase III.

CaRDI, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and U.S.D.A. Rural Development – NY, are working with three SET regions in New York State, to learn about them, click here.  Download an overview of SET at http://srdc.msstate.edu/set/files/set_overview_2012.pdf.

Food Policy Council Workshop and Networking Session for New York, June 7, 2012

Location:  Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 249 Highland Ave, Rochester, NY 14620, 10am - 4pm

Food and agriculture policy councils, food coalitions, and other multi-stakeholder groups are organizing across the country to engage government at all levels to develop just, healthy, and sustainable local food systems. There are now an estimated 150 food policy councils in the U.S. that run the gamut from loose local food networks to statutorily authorized local and state food policy entities. Throughout New York there are several counties, cities, and regions that have organized food policy councils or are in the early stages of doing so.

This workshop will be an opportunity to do two things. The first is to learn more about the "state of the art" of food policy council organizing and operation. What works, what doesn't, and what can we reasonably expect from this approach to food democracy.  The review will include the identification and engagement of council members, development and action on policy issues, creation of a suitable governance structure, and the development of private and public partnerships.  The workshop will use interactive training methods to help participants develop or improve their own food policy council.

Workshop Leaders and Sponsors: Mark Winne, Food Policy Council Program Director for the Community Food Security Coalition; Kate Mendenhall, Executive Director of NOFA-NY; Mark Dunlea, Executive Director of the Hunger Action Network of New York State. Funding for this event is provided by Heifer International.

Registration: Please register with Stephanie Backer-Bertsch at NOFA-NY. The number is 585-271-1979 x 509, or online at http://tinyurl.com/fpcreg. There is a registration fee of $10 per person to cover the cost of lunch and snacks. Due to limitations on space and workshop format, we must limit registration to the first 75 people. The registration deadline is May 25th.

"Strategies for a New Economy" will highlight best research and best practice under each theme.

Land Use Leadership Alliance Training Program

The LULC are pleased to announce an upcoming Land Use Leadership Alliance (LULA) Training Program this spring supported by the Westchester Community Foundation. Conducted by the Land Use Law Center of Pace University, this program is intended for local leaders involved in the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (NWEAC) and Southern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (SWEAC) who have a commitment to sustainable growth and land use and who are interested in learning how communities can respond to local and regional needs.

NWEAC and SWEAC’s mission is to collaborate effectively with its members to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, increase energy efficiency in communities, increase economic and sustainable development activity, and align local efforts with county, state, and federal initiatives. This LULA program will build upon the successful efforts of these organizations and focus on bringing land use and sustainable growth tools and techniques to interested individuals to assist them in the development of strategic plans for their community. It will help participants create new networks of support, identify successful sustainability techniques, and develop implementable local strategies.

When: April 23, May 7, May 21, and June 4, 2012
Where: Pace University School of Law, White Plains, NY

Training Needs Survey of Food System Professionals and Volunteers

The survey is open through May 31, 2012, and is open to practitioners throughout North America.

It is intended for folks involved with programs ranging from beginning farmers, farmland protection, food hubs, and food value chains to urban agriculture and community food security. American Farmland Trust, the Wallace Center at Winrock International, and the Michigan State U. Center for Regional Food Systems (formerly the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems) have teamed up with the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (JAFSCD) to conduct a survey of food system development practitioners in North America. If the link does not work paste the following in your browser: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Food_System_Development_Practitioner_Survey. The survey objective is to identify the specific challenges and training needs of current and prospective food system development practitioners. This anonymous questionnaire is largely simple checkboxes and should not take more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

For the purposes of the survey, a "food system development practitioner" is anyone who, as a significant portion of their work, uses community development strategies in working with farmers, business people, government agency staff, local residents, or other persons or entities to create or strengthen the viability, equity, and sustainability of food systems.

Undergirding this survey is the belief that improving knowledge and skills of practitioners will lead to more effective and efficient programs, and ultimately to more viable and sustainable food systems.
