Land Use Leadership Alliance
On Halloween day the second of two Land Use Leadership Alliance (LULA) trainings in the Keuka Lake watershed was successfully completed. Supported by both local and state funding sources, CaRDI collaborated with Pace University, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Genesee Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council to present the four-day course last Winter and again this Fall. The two LULA sessions were attended by a broad cross section of approximately fifty watershed residents and local land use leaders. Their interests centered on finding better ways to protect Keuka Lake from environmental harm while addressing the interests of farmers and other landowners in the watershed. The course, which integrates learning about the land use system in NY State with learning about constructive approaches to collaborative community decision making, received high marks from participants.
If you are interested in exploring the possibility of a LULA in your area, contact CaRDI's David Kay, dlk2@cornell.edu.
In early October, Issue #22 of our Rural New York Minute series was released, entitled "Gas Drilling in NYS: Riches or Ruin for Landowners and Communities?" by Rod Howe and David L. Kay, Cornell University.

In mid-October, Issue #22 of our Research & Policy Brief Series was released, entitled "Community Attitudes Toward Scientific Research", by Katherine A. McComas (Cornell University), John C. Besley (University of South Carolina), and Zheng “Janet” Yang (Cornell University).

Counting Caring: Attending to the Human in an Age of Public Management
November 18, 2008
9:30-3:30 pm
The "Counting Caring" workshop explores two very different frames of reference for thinking about our work - professional public management and personal relationships - and is directed at the need to more fully characterize the nature and value of community-based extension work. Workshop goals include that participants will become conversant with the two frames of reference, understand how to apply them to critically reflect on their own work, and be able to talk about the impact of their work in broader, richer language from multiple frames of reference. The facilitator is Dr. Margo J. Hittleman Coordinator of the Natural Leaders Initiative at CCE Tompkins and principal of MH Consulting. There is no fee for this workshop.
