It Takes a Region: A Working Conference to Build Our Northeast Food System
November 13-14, 2009
Desmond Hotel and Conference Center, Albany, NY
Recently, "food systems" have gotten a lot of attention – especially "local food systems." This conference takes on the region – our Northeast region. By taking a regional approach, we can grow our thinking and our work to develop a truly sustainable and resilient food system. We'll come away with a coherent strategy and concrete plans toward our shared vision. We'll be able to communicate effectively with all the right audiences to get them engaged. Through in-depth working sessions, homework, provocative debates and exercises, we'll tackle questions such as: Why regional? What does a regional food system look like? What do we want? What will it take to get there? Who needs to be at the table? What are our realistic milestones? What do we need to know, measure and monitor? We'll draw upon the exciting efforts already underway in our region and nationally, including alternative supply chain networks, research projects, infrastructure initiatives and policy advocacy. We'll address scale, size, and geography to reach beyond political boundaries.

FACTNY: 3rd Annual International Advanced Technology, Food and Agriculture Conference
December 3-4, 2009
Doubletree Hotel, Rochester, NY.
The International Advanced Technology, Food and Agriculture Conference will build on upon the preceding conferences in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, the conference will pay special attention to specialty crops and will bring together representative from many different specialty crop producers and processors. Joining them will be representatives from small to large technology companies and research centers who share an interest in investigating the challenges within specialty crops. The unique feature of this conference is that people, who never would have crossed paths otherwise, meet and start to solve problems! The conference structure will first allow participants to see the big picture about specialty crops and their challenges and the role that new technologies might play. Participants will then break out into smaller groups to discuss more specific topics. The first session will cover specialty crops divided by commodity; the second session will be divided into topics concerning technology and specialty crops. The event will wrap up on Friday with presentations of break-out group reports and a session focused on Retail and Branding. There will be a small trade show and plenty of networking time.

Governor Paterson Signs the Green Jobs/Green New York Bill
Program Will Assist Low-Income and Unemployed New Yorkers Train for Green Collar Jobs
Governor Paterson Launches New Website – GreenCareersNY.com – to Match Job Seekers with Green Training Opportunities
Governor David A. Paterson signed the Green Jobs/Green New York Act, establishing a program that will create green jobs and stimulate investment in weatherization and energy efficiency improvements for residential and commercial buildings.
"The workforce training that this bill supports will prepare New Yorkers to find jobs in the 21st century clean energy economy that we are building here in New York. I am proud to sign into law the Green Jobs/Green New York Act, so we can help New Yorkers secure jobs that help working families and businesses cut their energy bills while reducing greenhouse gas pollution," said Governor Paterson. "I have laid out a New Economy jobs plan that will help to put New Yorkers back to work through innovation and technology, and have set a goal to meet 45 percent of our electricity needs through energy efficiency and renewables by 2015. The Green Jobs/Green New York Act is an important tool in achieving these energy and economic goals."
The Green Jobs/Green New York Act (A.8901/S.5888 and chapter amendment A.9031/S.6032) directs the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to establish revolving loan and green jobs training programs to retrofit homes to conserve energy. Loans will be capped at $13,000 for residential and $26,000 for commercial properties. The program will target middleclass homeowners and small businesses that will pay back the loan out of what they save on their energy bills. The job training component will focus on new entrants to the workforce and displaced workers. The training programs and any education and enrollment efforts will be subjected to a competitive procurement process available to community based-organizations.

Interdisciplinary Community Design Student Group – Call for Projects
DesignConnect is a cross collaboration volunteer student organization rooted in comprehensive design service for small towns in Upstate New York. The premise of DesignConnect is to give real-time experience to students while providing design services for towns and cities that may not necessarily have the resources to hire professionals. As part of Cornell University's land grant mission, students provide a balance of sustainable innovation and real-time practicality to Upstate New York towns.
Student services include research & analysis, concept design, masterplanning, and visualizations. The hope is that the work could inspire community support, expand perceptions of what's possible, and more importantly, lead to funding through government support and not-for-profit grants to finance construction. Students will work on projects with the end goal of promoting environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic development. Student backgrounds include landscape architecture, interior design, architecture, real estate, law, historic preservation, environmental engineering, and civil engineering.
Currently, our Fall 2009 semester projects are partnerships with Ithaca, Elmira, and Cooperstown. Our Spring 2010 semester projects are partnerships with Ithaca, Elmira, Binghamton, and Caroline. Projects run either as single semester projects, or double semester projects depending on the level of complexity. For additional information about how to begin a partnership or more general information on DesignConnect, please contact Jennifer Ng at jenng@cdsnc.org.
